Anil Ambani led Reliance Entertainment to release the film festival’s darling and stealth Oscar contender GREEN BOOK on November 23, 2018, pan India. The American comedy-drama is based on a true story of friendship and relationship between working-class Italian – American bouncer who becomes a driver of an African- American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960’s American South. The film is not a biopic but is inspired by the true story about friendship between Dr. Donald Shirley, an erudite African – American pianist and his white chauffer Tony Lip.

The film that had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018 won over not just the audiences but also went on to win the People’s Choice Award. Directed by Peter Farrelly, the film has Viggo Mortensen essaying the role of Tony Lip and Mahershala Ali essaying the role of Dr. Shirley.

Oscar-nominated Viggo Mortensen, playing the biographical role of Tony Lip, is touted to be an Oscar frontrunner this year for best performance in the lead role category. Ask him about the story and he says, “This is a movie about a relationship between a black man and a white man before the Civil Rights Act, and the backdrop is one of obvious socio-economic and racial tension. In many ways, we’re facing the same problems today that are depicted in the film. There are a lot of mirror images and mirror concepts that our story deals with, between 1962 and now, and I think people will find that enlightening as well as entertaining" says Mortensen.

Oscar-winning Mahershala Ali, who also seems to be a popular choice for the Oscars yet again for best performance in a supporting role, further added, "This is a perfect film for audiences around the world because it’s about people who are different and who are able to discover their similarities and teach each other things about their differences. They’re able to accept each other. These men come from very, very different worlds and they become allies.”

The film also has Don Stark and Linda Cardellini in supporting roles. Apart from People’s choice award at TIFF, the film has gone on to win win Boston Film Festival - Best Picture, Best Actor for Viggo Mortensen, Film Fest 919 (Chapel Hill, NC) - Spotlight Award for Nick Vallelonga, Heartland Film Festival - Truly Moving Picture Award, Mill Valley Film Festival - Overall Audience Award, Middleburg Film Festival - Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature, Twin Cities Film Festival - Best Feature Film, New Orleans Film Festival – Audience Award, Philadelphia Film Festival – Audience Award.

The Oscar front-runner GREEN BOOK which reassures the audience that people can change and hatred can be defeated is all set to enthrall audiences in India on November 23, 2018.
