What started off as a mere glimpse two years back is fast emerging as a full-on trend if upcoming Bollywood flicks are any indication. After Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kangana Ranaut took the retro/vintage route in ACTION REPLAYY and ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI respectively, number of other leading ladies would soon be following suit in months to come. They are Priyanka Chopra (TERI MERI KAHAANI), Sonakshi Sinha (ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI - 2), Kajal Agarwal (SPECIAL CHABBIS), Mahie Gill (ZANJEER) and Kangana again in SHOOTOUT AT WADALA.

"Yes, since my film is set in the 70s and early 80s, I am bound to take retro route. Also, not just the setting but overall costumes would have to be as per the era,' says Sanjay Gupta who isn't stepping into this zone for the first time. 'In fact entire first half of my HAMESHA was set in a retro zone where Kajol was seen in 60s/70s outfits. Now, Kangana would be getting into the same mode for SHOOTOUT AT WADALA."

Incidentally Vidya Balan had recently taken an unabashed retro route when she went all out for her act in THE DIRTY PICTURE. For someone who was criticised for her dressing sense not too long ago, it was nothing short of incredible for her to be acknowledged for the ease with which he carried her part. Now Sonakshi Sinha would be seeing an altogether different wardrobe for herself when Milan Luthria, who has become a pro of sorts when it comes to making vintage affairs (ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI, THE DIRTY PICTURE) would be directing her in ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI sequel.

'What is of paramount importance though is that other than costumes, you have to get the basic aesthetics right,' says Luthria, 'What is the use of the costumes if your characters don't seem like belonging to that era. In each of my films I had to take extra care in ensuring that everything from set design to overall background complimented the actor. This is the reason why when Prachi wore the Bobby costume or Kangana wore those Diva like sarees in OUATIM, they didn't look out of place.'

Well, we look forward to some magic unfolding all over again.
