What would you call a person who completes her MBA studies from a top institute like IIM, Lucknow and instead of going for a stable job gives up everything in favour of music? Definitely a music freak! Yes, thats what you can describe the 20-something years old Gayatri Iyer. Despite no family background in music, Gayatri has risen today to be one of the most promising voices of the film industry, having sung for composers like Anu Malik, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Anand Raaj Anand & Himesh Reshammiya.
Composer Ram Sampath and me have been friends since school. When he started his career he called me on and off for small recording jobs through which I gained some experience in the studio environment. I also did a play with Alyque Padamsee in Class XI in which I was required to sing on stage. A lot of people who came to see the show were from the advertising industry and they gave me ideas to try my luck in singing for advertising jingles. This was the beginning of my desire to become a professional singer, informs the Indian classically trained singer.
A chance demo with Ram Sampath opened the doors of Bollywood for this talented singer. Composer duo Anand-Milind gave Gayatri her first break as she went on to sing for films like Loafer, Muqaddar, Daanveer and Insaaf for them. Meanwhile Gayatri was still not sure whether she wanted to be a professional singer or not. Meanwhile she landed up at IIM, Lucknow to pursue her MBA, which she completed but didnt take it up further as a career.
Somewhere deep in my heart the discomfort of leaving singing remained throughout my MBA days. When the course was over I finally took a call to come back to Mumbai and pursue singing for ad-films. I was fortunate enough to meet Ranjit Barot who gave my career a push. Through his studio I came in touch with a lot of composes and I started a full-fledged singing career, explains Gayatri whose first major hit song was Maar Gayo from the film Sandhya followed by Mohabbat Hai Mirchi from Chura Liya Hai Tumne and the very recent hit Saiyanji from the film Masti.
