The film is scheduled in few days. Are you excited?
It is always great and amazing to work with good people. It’s a kind of blessing in disguise for me to act in a Rajkumar Hirani film. The fact that it is the biopic on an actor who is still so popular and acts in the movies is all the more interesting. So, I am really excited and happy with the way SANJU has turned out to be.
Was it challenging to get into the skin of the character of Sanjay Dutt?
Initially, it was really difficult to get into the character. I tried to not mimic him because it would look caricaturish. I have tried to maintain a good balance by presenting myself as someone who is playing Sanjay Dutt. I have not tried to copy his mannerisms and style. The script of the film is rich in content and Rajkumar answered all my questions related to my character.
What was Sanjay Dutt’s reaction when he you in the film?
Rajkumar had sent one of the pictures during the shoot to Sanjay Dutt. He replied him back saying,“Tu Meri Picture Mujhe Kyun Bhej Raha Hai”. I really want Sanjay to have a good nostalgic feeling when he watches the film. His life is full of varied experiences and he went through various phases such as drugs and spending life in jail. I want him to relive the controversial, emotional and conflicted moments of his life.
How do you think the movie will impact the younger generation?
The younger generation can learn a lot through Sanjay Dutt’s mistakes. His drug addiction ruined his life and the younger generation can learn a big lesson from it. The film will also teach them the value of family and friends as Sanjay’s family stood by him when he went through difficult phases in his life. So, there is a lot to learn from his mistakes which he made due to immaturity and by being in a bad company. So, it is a story of a fallen hero who kept coming back.
How was the experience of working with Rajkumar Hirani?
Rajkumar is an amazing director. He is someone who does not make a film for himself. His films are filled with basic emotions and good feelings. His emotions are very basic and simple. As a filmmaker, his storytelling is very simple which is great too.
What has been your take away from the film?
The film has three important aspects (Father-Son Relationship, Friendship and a question mark). You will get to know the question mark when you will watch the film. But, the spine of the film rests on these three important aspects. Sanjay Dutt had a very different and complicated equation with his father. He used to fear him and hide from him. Paresh Rawal ji as Sunil Dutt is amazing and it was great working with him. He is such a great actor who actively does theatre even today. He is involved very much culturally with the kind of work he does.
Which was the most difficult and easiest part of Sanjay Dutt’s life to play?
I had plenty of fun and enjoyed the sequences of MUNNABHAI. The most complex part to play was the drugs part. It was disturbing, putting the comboard Sonam Kapoor, but imagine what situation must Sanjay sir into that he did it, a person who is submerged in drug that he isn’t aware what he I sdoin, inafct there was one scene when Sunil Dutt is busy so he tells Sanjay to take care of his mom and few minutes before his mother passed away, Sanju felt that she spoke something but he was in deep drugs that he doesn’t remember anything.
How was it work with Manishaa Koirala in the film?
My father and Manishaaji had done a lot of films and I have watched her performances in films like Bombay and Khamoshi. She is a great actor and has brought a lot of dignity to Nargis Duttji’s character. As someone who has battled cancer, she could relate to her character of Nargis Duttji.
Who are your friends who have stood by you?
I have a lot of school friends. Rohit Dhawan is a good friend and we talk a lot. Ayan Mukherjee is extremely close to me and we share a good bonding. He is more like a step father to me now.
When are you planning to be on social media?
I really don’t have any plans as of now. I am a stalker on social media. I may join maybe next year or sometime later in the future.
What are your expectations at the box office considering the fact that RACE 3 is going strong at the theatres.
Salman Khan has constantly pushed record breaking numbers at the Box-Office. It is great. SANJU is primarily a Rajkumar Hirani film and a biopic on Sanjay Dutt.
What’s that one thing you wish for, after having a some good line up of films?
I need a hit, I do trace box office numbers, I am lucky that despite some of my films not doing well, I got an opportunity to star in best of films.
