Bollywood is obsessed with biopics off late be it on a popular celeb or a sports legend, and now the recent biopic that released today of Sandeep Singh popularly known as Flicker Singh, one of the most celebrated Hockey players. Not many knew about the player as well as his tragic story till the time SOORMA was announced.
This isn’t the first time Bollywood touched upon a subject like Hockey. The Bollywood film on women’s hockey that we know about is the Shah Rukh Khan starrer CHAK DE INDIA, which was a fictional story about the Indian women's national field-hockey team and an ostracized player played by Shah Rukh Khan and how he redeems himself of a disastrous loss. SOORMA is not fictional. It is an account of a real person – Sandeep Singh, a biopic.
Sandeep Singh is an Indian professional field hockey player; generally featured as a full back and a penalty corner specialist for the team. SOORMA is about how he got into the sport. What made him excel in what he did, a circumstance in life when everyone felt he was done with, and his resurrection and rise like a phoenix! The biopic is a simple narrative of the important chapters of Sandeep Singh’s life from the periphery and of course the Indian Hockey.
The film stars Diljit Dosanjh, Tapsee Pannu and Angad Bedi in the central characters. SOORMA tells the story of the international hockey player Sandeep Singh, played by Diljit Dosanjh, who was paralyzed after an accidental gunshot injured him. The film’s tagline is “The Greatest Comeback Story of the Hockey Legend Sandeep Singh”. Fighting against all odds, Sandeep got back on his feet and made a comeback to international hockey.
The narrative also offers a few takeaways in the 131 minutes of its run time. It talks about having goals in life. Sandeep Singh initially did not have one but when he was challenged, he stopped at nothing. It also shows that talent needs to be identified and given the right chance. If one works hard, luck also supports you like it did in Sandeep’s case. The injury and his comeback is also about determination and love for the nation.
Tapsee Pannu as Sandeep’s love interest does a powerful, impactful role by supporting Sandeep, Angad Bedi fits the bill being a loving elder brother, Vijay Raaz as the coach give competent support in a film that is almost single-handedly carried by Diljit Dosanjh. The actor, singer and pop sensation who denied the role initially as he didn’t know about the story and the person in detail, despite all thing Diljit not only acted in the film, he also crooned a song and played a sport which he hasn’t ever played, Diljit certainly needs a bow for holding the film.
The hockey sequences choreographed by Sandeep Singh pass the muster. The music is soothing and is in sync with the goings-on. Talking about the director Shaad Ali, looking at his body of work in the past has done film, which never had huge stars but a film with a certain theme be it SAATHIYA, BUNTY AUR BABLI or the recent one OK JAANU. With SOORMA he roped in two diverse actors Diljit and Taapsee who hail from different region of cinema.
As it's produced by Chitrangda Singh, the boss lady who has done films which aren’t too conventional believed in a script a person whose journey was underdog and had faith that such a subject should reach the masses.
This film is special since it is about someone, as Sandeep Singh’s character says, “is not a legend yet” and still can instil inspiration amongst youth. A clean family film that can be watched and enjoyed and also recognize that India produces such talents.
With cricket being the only sport, India is obsessed with and Hockey, which is the National game, there are many people in this populated country who aren’t aware of hockey players or the essence of the game. This film and many such films in future will give rise to such underdog players and their journeys.
A well made, simple tale, which doesn’t glorify a person just for the sake of cinematic liberty. SOORMA is a must watch for everyone, be it a sports fanatic or not!
