Mantra in Aladdin will make you dance, laugh, cry and you wish to see him again!
We all have grown up watching the spectacular tale of Aladdin on television as cartoon, we love the camaraderie between Genie and Aladdin and love as pure as Jasmine and Aladdin. Back then in 90’s we all wished for a magic lamp like this and would want to the lamp and wanted Genie to grant us three wishes so that we could ask for what we want.
All the girls wanted a dress like jasmine for their birthday and in school skits we would dress up like either of the character from Aladdin.
As we grew up we read more about the fairy tale and saw it on television as a daily soap, and now we see a musical play Disney Aladdin in Mumabi nah.. like we say South Mumbai at NCPA Theater.
After a successful run of shows earlier this year, Disney’s Aladdin is back on the floorboards! Which gets us transported to a whole new world with the Broadway-style musical, a world-class production made entirely in India. Expect spectacular sets, special effects, including a wow-worthy magic carpet ride sequence, and Alan Menken’s beloved original score from Disney’s 1992 animated movie Aladdin. And sing along to classics such as ‘Friend Like Me’ and ‘A Whole New World’.
A cast of 50 performers dressed in a changing roster of 350 stunning costumes enacts the love story of Aladdin and Jasmine. It’s set in the fictional province of Agrabah, whose crooked grand vizier Jafar recruits Aladdin to find a magic lamp hidden in the Cave of Wonders. In the meantime, Aladdin and the princess Jasmine meet on Agrabah’s streets, become pals and end up falling in love with each other. Jafar, who wants to marry Jasmine for his evil ends, separates the two of them. But Aladdin overcomes him with a little help from Genie in the lamp. Audiences love the character of Genie, who has been given a desi flavour in this production.
The 2 hour 30 minutes play is colourful and musical with live singing and dancing with over 50 artists making our heart skip a beat with their minute and flawless performance. The play starts with Genie essayed by Mantra is the performer and star of the evening, his sarcastic take and relevant take as modern day genie is something that will make you go LOL. His impromptu witty one liners are the best.
As the show moves ahead, the story moves into Aladdin and Genie being good to close friends and you seldom enjoy seeing the banter. With friendship, emotions and modern age Aladdin the audience in the theatre cracks up and how!
Kira Narayanan, a theatre enthusiast from Chennai plays Jasmine, the lead female wherein she looks beautiful as well as empowers womanhood in today’s time, she has her own ideologies.
Aladdin is street smart, witty and his chemistry and bro-bonding with genie is something that you can’t miss.
The other cast entertain us and the grand stage and set with VFX and lights is something you wouldn’t want to miss.
Definitely the highlight of the show was Mantra as he filled the stage with positivity and today’s jokes which all of us could relate.
So what are you waiting for this holiday season
