Of course Tom Hardy is a great talent, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, LOCKE, but here in Ruben Fleischer's adaptation his character is invaded by that villain from Spider Man comics in this spin off that is dull, unexciting, needless and a lesson on how to screw a super hero franchise and turned it into a case of a split personality.
Sony gets involved in creating a mess of everything, and the puzzle remains unsolved?!. What is VENOM all about?, a monster, a super hero, a monster superhero, a split personality?, what is the chaos all about?. The magical web of The Amazing Spider Man is so desperately needed for our rescue over here.
Tom Hardy in a forgettable role though his bad is also good, plays Eddie Brock, an investigative reporter, and Venom – that alien provides the investigative reporter superpowers and in a manner that seems like a favour. What follows is an attack by space parasites. Eddie is against the evil desires of the tech wizard played by Riz Ahmed.
In the year of ‘marvel’ous super heroes - BLACK PANTHER, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, etc, VENOM is nothing but a waste, a blah. No insights, no debates, its ambitious no doubt, adapts a different approach but there is no solid conviction to support. A couple of moments save this from a complete disaster - when some humour comes from VENOM’s alter ego and the tease on the possibility for a sequel that may involve Spider Man.
Otherwise this anti hero is a no no…
