Ready to unleash their 27 year old dream in 2016 with WAZIR – starring Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar in lead, Bollywood trendsetter Vidhu Vinod Chopra is at ease, sitting comfortably with his writer Abhijat Joshi in his office. Stairs next to the editing/preview room of the production house leads me to the discussion room and am greeted with a refined exuberance.

While their lunch is getting prepared after which this two ingenious from the famous three - Vinod, Hirani and Joshi will begin scripting MUNNABHAI 3, the less spoken about Vinod Chopra, Abhijat Joshi Jodi opens about their association, the common pledge and the cutting edge in their cinema.

A thriller from the stable that gave meaningful on screen gems like MUNNABHAI, 3 IDIOTS, WAZIR is not just a thriller. Both Vinod Chopra and Abhijat Joshi claim it to be cinematically and entertainingly at par with their previous milestones.

“WAZIR is a champagne film, it’s unique and can set trends like MUNNABHAI MBBS” says Abhijat. On being asked whether this film that speaks about an unlikely friendship between a retired chess master played by Mr. Bachchan and an Anti-Terrorism Squad officer played by Farhan Akhtar over the game of chess, has anything to do with last year’s action thriller like BABY etc.

Vinod Chopra denies any patriotic or common cliché s associated with WAZIR, “It’s a story about friendship, an unusual friendship, in fact we are dedicating this film to friendship, what friends are for, the thrill, chess is a part but its more about friendship, a good idea is timeless, the idea of PARINDA is valid even today, look at HAMLET written about 400 years back and still its relevant”.

Co-writer Abhijat Joshi seconds the thought and adds, “Not a single day has passed in these 400 years when Shakespeare’s HAMLET is not remembered, or enacted”.

The director of memorable films like PARINDA, KHAMOSH, 1942: A LOVE STORY Vidhu Vinod Chopra, developed good faith in Bejoy Nambiar just by watching those 15 -20 minutes portions of DAVID shot in sepia tone and gave him the responsibility to helm WAZIR - his 27 year old dream.  He says, “I believed in Bejoy’s skills as a filmmaker, the sepia portions in WAZIR is brilliant, I didn’t like rest of the film but here he has given justice to our vision.” Raju Hirani was new in MUNNABHAI, Pradeep Sarkar was a first timer in PARINEETA, Rajesh Mapuskar got a break as director in FERRARI KI SAWAARI, it’s all about how we make the audience involved and entertain them as well.”

Joshi admits that even though Vinod gives the idea, the interference is more from a writer’s point of view rather than a producer’s point of view. Vinod doesn’t firmly believes in the term commercial cinema, rather he is more keen on entertainment and says, “Entertainment is the soul of our stories, we have tried to make WAZIR as entertaining as MUNNABHAI, 3 IDIOTS or PARINDA”, our cinema is not genre bound we have explored in other genres also sci-fi PK, period EKALVYA, PARINEETA’ in our endeavor to entertain.”

On asked what will be the take home from WAZIR like jadu ki jhappi in MUNNABHAI, ‘All is Well’ from 3 IDIOTS, Chopra smiles and replies, “Big B in a scene says - putting a smile on my friends face is the most amazing thing I have done in life, it’s all about the friendship, life and cinema we have seen in our life’s’”.
