When Dilip Kumar came to Meena Kumari's rescue!
While Dilip Kumar was regarded as ‘Tragedy King’; Meena Kumari was crowned as ‘Tragedy Queen’ but incidentally when the duo did tragic films like FOOTPATH (1953) and YAHUDI (1958) both films failed to click! In contrast when they did comedies like AZAAD (1955) and KOHINOOR (1960) both created box-office history.

Meena Kumari shared a warm relation with Dilip Kumar and what she admired most of Dilip Kumar was his cool attitude and sharp presence of mind. In an interview, Meena Kumari narrated a chilling incident how Dilip Kumar rescued her from jaws of death thanks to his knack for being calm even in times of crises.
She recalled, “For the movie AZAAD we were shooting in a valley in Coimbatore. In the film Dilip Kumar played a bandit who kidnaps me to his dangerous den in the mountains.”
“In the film, there was a scene where I and Dilip Kumar had to sit in a rope trolley and cross a dangerous valley from one side of a mountain to another. As planned both Dilip sahab and I sat in one trolley and to capture the scene the film director along with the cameramen sat in another trolley. However, when we were mid-way about 300 to 400 feet above sea level, the rope began to tumble as it could not withstand the weight of our foursome.”
“Watching this I was bitterly terrified and created a lot of chaos but I must appreciate Dilip Sabha, despite knowing the gravity of the situation he did not panic and gave a lot of confidence to me,” she candidly confessed.
“It was his sheer calmness and solace that gave me strength to be calm and composed which ultimately helped us to get out from the danger,” she concluded.
