Chain Se Humko Kabhi Aapne Jeene Na Diya
Zehar Bhi Chaha Agar, Pinaa To Peene Na Diya…
|ASHA BHOSLE AND O P NAYYAR|
Arguably this is one of the best songs that veteran singer Asha Bhosle has sung in her entire career. Deservedly she also fetched the Filmfare Best Singer Award but readers would be stunned to know that though the song gave her fame and name, the lyrics of this song haunted Asha Bhosle so much that in anger she neither went to collect her Award during the award function nor did she allow the filmmaker to retain the song in the film!!!
Readers may wonder what was so inciting in the song. Read on…
The song is from Sunil Dutt and Rekha starrer PRAN JAYE PAR VACHAN NA JAYE (1974).
The lyrics of this song were written by lyricist S H Bihari and the film had music by O. P. Nayyar. According S.H.Bihari he had written a ghazal for a mushaira (poet convention) which O.P. Nayyar heard and was overwhelmed by its lyrics. He insisted to use it for the film and the song was recorded.
Bihari in an interview informed, “The song was recorded in the late 60s when Asha tai (Asha Bhosle) and Nayyar Sahab shared a healthy relationship. But the movie got delayed and in between their relation too got soured and the two parted ways.”
“During the publicity of PRAN JAYE PAR VACHAN NA JAYE, this song became quite popular and in particular its lyrics became talk of the nation because the lyrics vividly conveyed the trauma of the affair between Asha ji and Nayyar sahab. The media added fuel to fire. Hence peeved at the stories circulating to malice their relationship Asha ji got the song deleted from the film. She also did not collect her award. Nayyar sahab had collected her award in her absence,” Bihari informed.
If you attentively listen to the song, then mark the words …
Aapka Gham Jo Is Dil Mein Din-Raat Agar Hoga
Sochake Yeh Dam Ghutataa Hai Phir Kaise Guzara Hoga
Kaash Na Hoti Apni Judaai Maut Hi Aa Jaati
Koi Bahaane Chain Hamari Rooh To Pa Jaati
