THE LEGO MOVIE V/s THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART
No sequel can match the genius of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller in THE LEGO MOVIE which set the bar so high. The expectations are bound to be huge on the novelty, concept quotient and on that level THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART isn’t that awesome. But hey, if you are a freak, a geek or a simple lover of good pop culture animation extravaganza with good music and dash of sibling love thrown in with the evergreen dope of hope, THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART is the sunshine you need in troubled times.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the masterminds behind the 2014 phenomenon THE LEGO MOVIE take a back seat and pen the script while TROLLS fame Mike Mitchell takes the charge as the helmer. Certainly, it required a great effort a challenge for Mike Mitchell to match the sarcasm of consumerism, human nature going plastic, the meta genius of THE LEGO MOVIE 2014 and it takes time for Mike Mitchell to accumulate all the elements of the original to the fore and after some predictable cliché, the story starts taking shape when Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi (Tiffany Haddish) expresses her desire to marry Batman (Will Arnett). The shape changing Queen and her universe called Systar System that appears dangerous for Lucy. Emmet and his doppelganger – Rex the raptor-trainer are duty bound had to rescue Lucy, Batman and all of them. What follows is a series of ‘catchy’ songs and awesome sequences that get stuck in your head. The amazing voice cast led by Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett and Alison Brie cast their spell once again with the new addition Tiffany Haddish registering her moments of pride.
Some cynics may argue to be a TOY STORY’ thing. THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART appears as a musical to the original that is not ashamed to poke a satire on itself at times. At sometimes, the movie seems to be obsessed with Rex.
All said and done, THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART is actually a musical ode to the original, it has the nostalgia, its elements of awesomeness as it follows the path without adding any sweeping nuances to the bar that is was set high in 2014. Like a true entertainer, it keeps its best for the final moments while adorable Chris Pratt/Elizabeth Banks duo keep charming the audience without fail in a dazzling animated musical resulting in a rightly earned ‘super cool’ sequel.
