Shawn Mendes has issued an apology to Sam Smith for accidentally misgendering them.
The 22-year-old singer who introduced Sam at the 2020 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball show on Thursday, reportedly apologized for mistakenly using the wrong pronoun.
Sam Smith, 28, who identifies himself as genderqueer and uses they/them pronouns, was wrongly presented by the ‘Senorita’ hitmaker referring to Sam as “he” instead of “they,” reports PEOPLE.
Shortly after the incident, Shawn Mendes, whose hits include ‘Stitches’ and ‘Wonder’ took to Instagram on Friday (Dec. 11) to say sorry to Smith.
“Oh @samsmith I’m so sorry for referring to you as a ‘he’ for your jingle ball introduction,” he wrote. “It absolutely slipped my mind. Won’t happen again… Sending you so much love!”
“Also you are absolutely one of the funniest people I’ve ever met!”
The Oscar, Grammy and Brit award winner graciously accepted the apology and replied to Mendes on their own Instagram Story, adding: “We’re all learning together.”
“Happy holidays, all my love xx,” they added along with two heart emojis.
Smith, who released their third album ‘Love goes’ in late October has been candid about their personal life. The singer came out as non-binary in June 2019 after he revealed in an Instagram statement, saying “Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM.”
“After a lifetime of being at war with my gender, I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.”
“I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but f*ck it!” they added.
“I understand there will be many mistakes and mis gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you.”
Meanwhile, Shawn Mendes recently dropped ‘The Christmas Song’ with his girlfriend Camila Cabello. He also released his Netflix documentary ‘In Wonder’ last month, reports Dailymail.
