Who needs a publicist?

View IIFA Awards 2007 - Picture GalleryThe Big B during last fortnight appeared in a series of rather lengthy interviews in various newspapers of the country. This happened second time for Big B that he had to interact with the media to clarify his perceived position. In between, there was a deep interregnum. AB interacted only with the media on public forums on the eve of the release of his various films. This kind of trait is observed in most of the stars, the big ones in particular.

The love and hate relationship that the stars have with the media continues unabated. The media also succumbs to the charm of the star, and starts' eating from their palms once the charm is swayed. Then again it is the turf war where the speculations are projected as news and as there are no denials the same is at times perceived as truth.

However, in this age when Internet is the most potent option that is available for all and sundry it sounds rather intriguing to go to the media and express the views. The issue is rather peculiar and this is one streak that does not seem to have been imbibed by the film stars of Hindi films from their illustrative peers of Hollywood. Most of the stars in Hollywood have their own blogs through which they announce all the major events happening in their lives, and communicate with their fans through them.

In case of our film stars of Hindi films no such initiative has been taken, thought there are quite a lot of technology freaks present in the industry. It is altogether a different matter that all of the stars have their presence on the web site, which either is run by a fan or fans, or if the web presence of the star is there it is the job of the publicist who is doing the job of a compiler. He compiles all the stories of the star and puts them at one place.

In this age where the Indian mainstream media is eagerly converging towards their celebrity brethren of the developed world in terms of adapting the traits of paparazzi, and there is a mad frenzy for news of all kinds related to the stars even a fortnightly or a monthly blog on the part of the stars to begin with could go a long way in disproving some of the rumors associated with them. Besides, when an attempt is made to communicate with the fans directly, it has the profoundest impact. Blogging seems to be more effective when rumors have to be quashed or announcements about important events have to be made. The consideration however, has to be that; every event and news item should not be construed as a commodity with a selling price.

Internet is going to be the medium of the future, and the stars would be forced to converge to it. It is just a matter of time before it is done. The faster it is done, the better it would be.
