Download Jhoom Barabar Jhoom WallpapersWhen Feroze Khan had introduced the music of London Pub Clubs to the Hindi films for the first time through his movie YALGAAR, he was scoffed at for introducing the techno-music to a country, which had its own glorious tradition of music. One of the characteristics of the music was constant reverberation of the beats of the Dhol in the background in conjunction with electronic instruments trying to unsuccessfully drown it. The music Director, Channi Singh did not get another chance to score music in the Hindi film industry once again. Feroze Khan and Channi Singh, however, must be having a gleeful feeling about their experimentation, more so Feroze Khan as now a whole film has been released JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM, which has a strong binding element in the form of a Dhol and in the climax Dhol has an eminent position. In fact this was probably for the first time that the lead actors Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol were seen after a long-long time with Dhol hanging in their neck as a signature statement.

O.P. Nayyar should be credited to have utilized Dhol in his compositions, and Shammi Kapoor had danced to its tune in gay abandon in KASHMIR KI KALI, but after that it was used sporadically. This could be owing to the fact that the background of Hindi films shifted from Northern India more so Punjab, and therefore Dhol would not find a place for itself. Subsequently, Manoj Kumar reintroduced the Dhol in the Indian songs in PURAB AUR PASCHIM, when he wished to depict the rural scenario. Manoj Kumar should be credited for the same, as here Dhol was there in most of the songs, though it had made its debut in Dev Anand's PREM PUJARI. Though the music of PREM PUJARI was by S.D. Burman, the sheer fact that he gave it a prominence in one of his compositions was indicative about the fact the producer director, Dev Anand had a great understanding of folk of the area, and he used the icons of folk like Dhol with aplomb.

Once when Dhol evolved from the fields of Punjab and into the pubs of England, being carried by the emigrants it was just a matter of time before it could make its grand entry once again with the evolving milieu among the youth, and YALGAAR was the initiative. But it was slightly ahead of the time, probably owing to the fact that plethora of Punjabi music channels had still to debut, which by belting songs of this breed set it among the youth as the new idiom of expression. Dhol in fact is a symbolic musical instrument that connotes the Indian hip-hop music and it seems to be catching on in this sense than in any other sense for the time being. This is therefore being capitalized by the filmmakers as they have found a new NRI audience as well, whose youth is seeped through and through with the beats of Dhol. That is also the reason why even a Shah Rukh Khan hung it around his neck in KAL HO NA HO.

As more and more films are being made, with diaspora as one of the prime target audience, the folk medium of expression of enjoyment and merriment like Dhol have got a new lease of life. This is a very good sign about the assertion of identity and stabilization of a brand of music associated with the Indian culture, predominantly of the North Indian variety.
