While celebration of his birthday may be somewhat less luminous owing to the presence of the Indian cricket team in Mumbai, one thing can be sure when Dev Anand releases his autobiography on the eve of his 84th birthday; it should create a stir in the industry. Dev Anand is the man who is educated articulate and has been at the helm of affairs of the industry for more than 50 years. He has seen it all, the studio system, the advent of star system and then return to the studio system in a more systematized manner of the present times. His peers, his contemporaries and even those who followed him in the next generation either have hung the boots, or have created a slot for themselves in the heavens above.
His autobiography would be interesting as one would get a chance to hear from the manner his quest for giving one heroine or the other on a continuous basis and most of them have been the trendsetters for the industry. It would be of interest to see what prompted Dev Anand to select the heroines who had an urban demeanor, as nearly all of the heroines that Dev Saheb gave to the Hindi film industry, are those who had a strong urban moorings. It may be that the urban sophisticated slot that Dev Anand created for himself may have been the guiding force in selection of his leading ladies as well. It is just that during the last few years that his discoveries are not making the mark in the industry, otherwise till Tabu all his discoveries have ruled the industry in one way or the other. Among the illustrious ones making to this list, most famous are Zeenat Aman, Tina Munim, Zahida et all.

Dev Anand was also the man who took the Hindi cinema to international locations in a big manner, and the spectacle of grandeur, which has become a de rigor for the Hindi films, has its genesis in the efforts made majorly by him. It all started with PREM PUJARI in a big way and continues through various films upto LOVE IN TIME SQUARE. The novelty of Dev Anand's shoot lay in the fact that he shot in the places on foreign locales where nobody had shot before, as he did in the case of PREM PUJARI where his locations were a profuse mixture of the country side, or in DES-PARDES and LOOTMAAR where the locations moved around English pubs. He was also the first man who went out to shoot in Sikkim and that too during the time when Sikkim was still to be incorporated into India, and as such it would be particularly interesting to see whether Dev Saheb has commented about it or not.

The kings of comedy of the likes of Johny Walker, Mehmood etc., may not have seen the light of the day, were the Navketan films not have discovered him. Or for that matter even Jackie Shroff who most would think debuted in HERO in 1983, but he had made his first screen appearance in SWAMI DADA. Incidentally, Dev Anand was also the first director who brought foreign actresses to the Hindi cinema, as he did in SWAMI DADA with Christiano Neil.

Many a directors and music directors honed their skills under his banner and include biggies like Guru Dutt, Raj Khosla, Vijay Anand etc. He believed in good lyrics and therefore he had the best of writers of the times writing for him be it Hasrat Jaipuri, Sahir Ludhianvi or Neeraj or Anand Bakshi.

As Dev Anand has himself said he may have to start writing the sequel to his autobiography as he may not be able to tell it all in one volume. That is very true, as he was also involved with the new political experimentation that happened during the Janta Party time in 1977.

As has been seen with Vyjantimala's autobiography, Dev Saheb's work may also unruffled many a feather. So be it, Dev Saheb is distinguished by pursuing his own ideologies, come what may; and he should do so as then only would a candid scenario of how the Hindi film industry flourished emerge.
