While odes have been written by the film lyricists across the spectrum eulogizing the virtue of a flower in general per se, i.e. it has been used more as a common noun, there are very rare instances where a particular variety of flower has been chosen and the lyrics have been developed around it, as it has been done by Gulzar in DELHI 6, the song in question ''Gainda Phool'', sung with a lot of gay abandon and carelessness by Rekha Bhardwaj. As a matter of fact, the flower may have been rose as well, but the choice of marigold is a conscious one, as the kind of ubiquitous presence that marigold has in and around DELHI 6 i.e. Chandni Chowk area has to be seen to be believed.

The lyrics built up around the marigold or Gainda Phool does not seem to be an out of the box thinking, but a lot of science has gone into it. When this song plays it registers in the subconscious mind a flavour, and a color, more so an occasion of auspiciousness, and what auspicious occasion can there be than marriage. The lyrics has an idiom that harks back to the importance folk had during the times of marriages, and the composition that Rahman has given to it, would be probably his one of the slowest compositions that he has composed ever.

CHECK OUT: DELHI 6, Pigeons and the quotient of success

The most famous songs in the Hindi film oeuvre which extol the virtues of flower are, ''phoolon ke rung se'', phool tumhe bheja hai khat mein'', which though extol the importance of flower as a prop to convey love, and in the visual simile most of the times a rose has been used, why did a writer before Gulzar not think about focusing on a variety of flower to built lyrics around it, as he did in DELHI 6. There is one song where rose finds specific mention and it goes like'' phool tum gulab ka, kya jwab aapka''' from TERE GHAR KE SAMNE, otherwise we have taken flowers for granted to use in the generic sense.

May be, Gainda Phool would set the gray cells of our writers thinking and flowers of diverse hues would get specific focus and could become a signature tune for each variety. It would then, become another benchmark for DELHI 6, and by logical culmination for Rahman and Gulzar.
