Shikaras gone: Would Kashmir still hold the charm?

Whenever the Hindi films returned to Kashmir, or whenever Kashmir was used as the backdrop of the movies, the Shikaras formed an integral part of the whole set up. However, the proliferation of Shikaras in such a large numbers may have forced the government to take this decision. It might have been done to protect the Dal Lake but it could have fallout in the long run, that it was one of the famous landmarks used by the Hindi films as also films of other languages to publicize the beauty of Kashmir.

While they would continue to remain in posteriori it would indeed be an opportune moment to have a glimpse of famous Shikara moments in the Hindi films.




Who could forget the distinct presence that the Shikaras made when Shashi Kapoor emerged as the boatman in the film JAB JAB PHOOL KHILE. He as an eternal Kashmiri caught between the dilemma of leaving Kashmir for the love interest or leaving love for Kashmir that was in his heart, brought out the dilemma that an average man faces in places like Kashmir.
