As a medium of creativity cinema is one medium that does not have any parallels. No wonder, the medium of cinema has been all over the world to spread the message of diversity as also to inform the world about the existence of diverse cultures and practices. It is the leverage of the visual medium that is increasingly being utilized in serving the cause of education as well. In India however, cinema's outreach still is a matter of debate.

May be, after the Mumbai Children Film Festival that has been organized by Ryan Foundation, the view about cinema could change. Ryan Foundation has taken this monumental step by sensitizing the students about the films being made for children all over the world in association with Subhash Ghai's Whistling Woods International School, that gives training in the craft of film making. Besides, it also took steps to sensitize the parents of the children by organizing a free film show for all the wards of children studying in their schools all over Mumbai. Children as a category is a class that gets attracted to the visual media in a big way, and if by this interference they can be weaned away from the television then the initiative would have served its purpose very well.

The film festival has been spread out for a week, in which more than 200 films from all over the world would be shown to children across different cinema halls in different corners of Mumbai. One thing is for sure; phenomenal success of SALAAM BOMBAY has indeed been a catalytic factor on throwing the focus on children as a niche film-viewing category. Coupled with it, the success that SMILE PINKI achieved, incidentally it was an opening film for this Film Festival, has been the catalytic factor in focusing the spot light back on children. Incidentally, during the current year, films like TAHAAN and SIKANDAR have given a new opportunity to the filmmakers to approach the genre of film making from the perspective of a child. It was not done earlier.

Various studies that have been done, have pointed out to the fact that spirit of creativity is going to be one of the biggest stimuli driving the engine of economic growth in India. It would be owing to the fact that the medium of creativity is a field that buzzes with entrepreneurs and therefore it definitely has the potential to provide catalysis to the economy of the country. Therefore this initiative taken by Ryan School should indeed go a long way in developing a new creed of cinema aficionados who would appreciate its outreach and would view it in all seriousness, and understand its outreach when they grow up. May be, this initiative should become an annual feature henceforth.
