Star daughters of Hindi Cinema less successful than Star sons

At the IIFA Awards in Ontario, Canada, Dharmendra, when he appeared along with his sons Sunny Deol  and Bobby Deol, made very telling comment. He said that he had come here to market his sons, a normal statement to be made by a father, but he also said that he wants to market his daughter Esha Deol as well. It was an acknowledgement about the fact that though the star sons have been able to make their mark, star daughters have not been able to make their presence felt in the same way.

At the award function was also present Sonakshi Sinha, latest star daughter entrant, and from Esha Deol to Sonakshi Sinha, the generational shift among star children has possible reached its conclusion, as Sonakshi in all probability could be the last of the star off-spring of the stars of previous generations to make her debut in Hindi cinema. Sonakshi has made an impressive debut with DABANGG but it would be interesting to watch how she fares in her second film.

This begs a question whether star-daughters of Hindi cinema have got the same recognition as it has been bestowed by the fans to their brothers. Gleaning the annals of history of Hindi cinema could throw up some suggestions. The first real star daughters who made their debut and made it count in a big way were Nutan and Tanuja, daughters of Shobhana Samarth. Incidentally, Kajol daughter of Tanuja was the most successful star in the family across generations, while her other daughter Tanisha could not make a mark for herself. So, in this case the results even out. In the same manner one can review the performance of Sen Family i.e. from Suchitra Sen onwards. Suchitra Sen was one of the most successful stars of black and white era while her daughter Moon Moon Sen could not attain same success, and even her daughters Raima Sen and Riya Sen could not get toe hold in Hindi cinema, though both have their presence in Bengali cinema.

The real test of the premise needs to be tried out by testing it vis-a-vis the debuts of star daughter during last five or six years. Here one needs to underline, that star daughters would also include daughters of directors as well, and in this category Raveena Tandon made her mark in a big way, before she hung her boots. Similarly, Anita Raj who was daughter of character actor Jagdish Raj could achieve success in a much larger manner as compared to the success that her father enjoyed in Hindi film industry.

Moving on to the present times, the real success story of star daughters could be that of Kareena Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor, as the kind of success that they have achieved would be a matter of envy for any star daughter. Could their success however be attributed to the fact that they moved out of the family, i.e. the Kapoors and started living separately along with their mother Babita, who herself was a successful star of her times, and therefore could provide tips for her daughters to succeed in industry. May be not, as the same logic did not happen in case of Dimple Kapadia who also was living separately from Rajesh Khanna, but both her daughters Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna failed to impress.

While Hema Malini is trying once again to give a new lease of life to her daughter Esha Deol's career, and even father Dharmendra has jumped into the arena to push her, her career apart from the film that her mother is producing has not taken off. In the same manner, Soha Ali, daughter of Sharmila Tagore, though she got a good break in RANG DE BASANTI, could not capitalize on the success and is to be seen mostly in an advertisement of a room freshener.

Sonam Kapoor, Anil Kapoor's darling daughter, who has now completed almost four years in Hindi cinema has not been able to deliver a hit, though she has been able to manage her career in such a manner that she continues to hog the limelight through the media, both nationally and internationally. Would MAUSAM do the trick for her? How many of us even remember that Shraddha Kapoor, daughter of Shakti Kapoor has already featured in two different films? In the same manner Shruti Hassan who tried to establish her foot in Hindi cinema has gone back South, perhaps to bask in the reflected glory of her father Kamal Hassan, rather than to try her luck in Hindi cinema based on the reputation of her mother Saarika.

So, one can say that star daughters have not been able to make their mark in the same manner as their brothers of the same generation have. Could it be owing to the fact that the way cinema has evolved where skin show of a female character is a norm, which an industry girl or rather a family girl is hesitant to do, owing to the tag of the family, (Karisma and Kareena being the exception), and other girls ready to do it, has been the stumbling block. May be, it could be that if one has talent one can survive, family tag or no family tag, and that could be the reason why the female stars have not been as successful as the male stars in second generation. It could also be owing to the fact that the acting career is more a choice as an afterthought than a preparation as it happens in the case of male offspring, while same could not be the case with female stars. The premise is being forwarded, as seldom does one come across an evidence of a female star, belonging to a family taking detailed acting lessons with same rigor as their brothers do.
