Pakistan to decide on screening Indian films
The Pakistan government is expected to soon decide on a proposal for allowing the screening of Indian films in the country, Online news agency reports.
A proposal on this has been forwarded to the cabinet for its approval, the culture ministry informed the National Assembly in a written statement Friday.
The statement said the government was "actively" considering the proposal for screening Indian movies in Pakistani cinema houses.
The house was further told that after getting the cabinet's nod, a schedule and modus operandi for screening Indian movies would be announced.
Pakistan banned the screening of Indian films in the country after the 1965 war with India.
The culture ministry's statement said the move to allow the screening of Indian films was taken to stop Indian movies carrying "malicious propaganda against Pakistan" from being screened in India and to counter charges that Lollywood, the country's film industry, was copying Indian movies.
The statement contended a decision to permit the screening of Indian movies would boost the local film industry and make Pakistani movies accessible to a big market in India.
The house was told that Pakistan would earn a huge sum of foreign exchange through the decision.
The statement said if Indian films were permitted to be screened in Pakistani cinema houses, it would help stop Bollywood from producing anti-Pakistan movies in future and rid the local industry of mafia that "enjoy financial benefits".
