The Congress Friday named film star Sanjay Dutt as one of its three candidates for the biennial election to the Maharashtra legislative council.
Congress general secretary Oscar Fernandes announced the candidature of Dutt, son of Sports Minister Sunil Dutt, after the party's central election authority meeting here.
Dutt had campaigned for his 74-year-old father in the Mumbai Northwest parliamentary constituency during the parliamentary poll, much to the displeasure of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray. The elder Dutt had defeated the Shiv Sena's Sanjay Nirupam in the poll.
Thackeray had been instrumental in securing the release of Sanjay Dutt, who was arraigned and imprisoned for the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai that killed 297 people.
Pratap Singh Mohite Patil and Muzzaffar Hussain are the other candidates for the election to the legislative council.
