Sunil Dutt heads 2010 Commonwealth Games organising committee
Sports Minister Sunil Dutt will be the chairman of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, it was decided at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday.
Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Gulam Nabi Azad, Delhi Lieutenant Governor B.L. Joshi and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit were among those who attended the meeting.
Dutt said he would now constitute the organising committee and sub-committees for the first-ever Commonwealth Games in India. The various committees would ensure that Delhi is well equipped to host the 19th edition of the games, he added.
He said the organising committee would ensure that world class stadiums and other infrastructure were provided for hosting the Games.
India were awarded the games at the general body meeting of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) at Montego Bay in Jamaica Nov 13 last year.New Delhi defeated the Canadian city of Hamilton, the only other contender, 46 votes to 22. A 50-member delegation of the Indian Olympic Association, led by its president Suresh Kalmadi, had attended the meeting.
