Aashish Chowdhury & Gracy Singh as Hariya & Meethi

By Parag Desai

Aashish ChowdhuryHe's had two hits in a row - Qayamat and Girlfriend - but Aashish Chowdhury would rather not gloat about it and has already moved on to doing 'films with intelligent scripts'. And so he is doing Whiteland, a film "which is something on the lines of Lagaan, in terms of ambience and setting. It's set in Dandi in Kutch, during the British rule. Coincidentally, Gracy Singh who was also in Lagaan is my heroine in the film. I play Hariya and she's Meethi. It's really a film that fits into my thinking of trying out new and varied characters." Interestingly, the mahurat of this film was held in Raj Bhavan.

Aashish is feeling gung ho about his other film that's due for release and which is called Let's Enjoy. "It's about this guy, Armaan Pratap Singh, who's come from the US and decides to throw a party on his farmhouse at Delhi to catch up with all his friends. While there are about 30 to 40 people in the film, the story boils down to just 14-15 characters and finally these four stories that are unfolding that one night. It's nothing like a regular commercial film, no formulae added and I'm really kicked about doing it. It's about this one rocking night. I would call it an ensemble film where the characters are getting at one another." His co-stars in the film "are Arzoo Gowitrikar and a whole lot of talented guys from Delhi theatre. You know when I went to Delhi for shooting I thought I would teach them a lesson or two but after the rehearsals and workshops the directors had held for us, I think I learnt a thing or more about acting. I knew I was up against some good actors and had to pull up my socks. That's great for me because I want to constantly learn and evolve and working in a film should allow you that, right?" he says humbly.

Aashish ChowdhurySpeaking about the brouhaha over Girlfriend he says given a chance he would still do that film "because I can relate to it but sorry, I can't relate to the controversy that went with it. You won't believe it but after Girlfriend I was beseeched with all kinds of sleaze films from Mistress to S.E.X to Topless to everything. If I had done all those films I would have become a porn star!" Aashish says he's realistic enough about his standing as an actor. "I want to do films which give me an opportunity to do varied stuff because I see the result of formula films every Friday. If I am panned for acting in Girlfriend, I'm sure Let's Enjoy will take that flak off me."

An actor with clearly a mind of his own, Aashish Chowdhry who after doing a brief stint with television, is enjoying acting on the big screen immensely. And proof of it are the different films in his kitty from Padam Kumar's 'Kahin Bhi Kabhi Bhi' with Dino Morea and Dia Mirza, Ajay Chandok's 'Kisse Pyaar Karun' with Arshad Warsi and Udita Goswami, a thriller with "Karan Razdan and of course a few others which are in the process of being finalized." So busy is the actor that he says he doesn't have 'dates to even get married'.
