For several years now Hema Malini has been dedicating the program Jaya Smriti in memory of her late mother Smt. Jaya Chakravarty - a remarkable lady who dedicated her life to promoting young talent and patronizing art and culture.

Every year Jaya Smriti offers a platform to talented young classical dancers from all over the country to display their talent and has in the past promoted folk dances like the Purulia Chhau and Mahiri dance from Odissi.

This year the program was scheduled to unfold into a three day festival at Nehru Centre presenting 'Stree Shakti' celebrating womanhood through dance music, workshops and contests.

Hema Malini to present two dance ballets - Mahalakshmi and Durga and daughter Ahaana would pay her respects to her prolific grandmother with an Odissi dance recital.

After its inauguration amidst thunderous applause by legendary Waheeda Rehman on 16th November, the Day One saw an all women Indo fusion band 'White Lilies', a kathak recital by Pooja Pant and Ahaana Deol and Pavitra Bhatt rendering an Odissi-Bharatnatyam presentation. However, due to the severe illness of Respected Shri Balasaheb Thackrey followed by his sudden demise, Hema Malini decided to postpone the remaining two days of the Jaya Smriti fest, which will now take place on 26th & 27th December. So now, on 26th December evening, Day Two will begin with an Odissi performance by Mitali Varadakar and a fusion violin recital by sisters Ragini & Nandini. The day ends with Ms Hema Malini's dance ballet 'Mahalakshmi'.

The Third and final day will commence with East meets West fusion dance by Nritya Pravah group. Like every year an artist of the highest order is bestowed upon the Jaya Smriti Award and honored on stage. This year, Shri Bhushan Lakandri will be the recipient of this award for his outstanding contribution and significant work as a director and choreographer in the field of classical and contemporary dance...followed by the exhibition of the winning short film, photography and painting with the announcement of the winners by the Jury.

The festival wraps up with a befitting finale with the dance ballet 'Durga' by Ms. Hema Malini rendering on stage the powerful Devi herself - the embodiment of 'Stree Shakti'.

The representation of the womanhood - she is the savior of the mankind and destroyer of all evil.
