While reams have been written about Saira Banu and her love story with ace superstar Dilip Kumar, whom she married, few may know that she was the ‘First’ actress to be bestowed with the inimitable title of ‘Dream Girl’!

I know it may come as a stunner to the readers because eminent actress Hema Malini is widely acclaimed by the title of ‘Dream Girl’! However Saira Banu, the legendary beauty queen in an interview to a leading national daily credited the title to be the brainchild of film legend Subodh Mukherjee, who introduced her in his movie JUNGLEE.

Recalling about the title she said, “Since my mother Naseem Banu, was exceptionally beautiful and renowned by the title of Pari Chehra (Angel-Face) hence Subodh ji wanted to introduce me grandly and create inquisitiveness among the cine buffs that if the mother is so beautiful so how stunning the daughter would be?”

She continued, “Hence before the release of JUNGLEE he designed a unique and a powerful marketing strategy. I was introduced on the posters of JUNGLEE with my face hidden under full ghoonghat (veil), which was gradually lifted in the upcoming posters as the movie came close to date of its release. To make the cine buffs more curious Subodh ji had coined the punch line, ‘Behold the Dream Girl’!

The poster created a storm amongst movie lovers in India and the movie was a huge hit. It celebrated golden jubilee (50 weeks run).”

“Later in the mid 70s famous filmmaker Pramod Chakravarty made a movie DREAM GIRL, starring Hema Malini and Dharmendra. Since then the title got associate with Hema Ji”, she concluded.
