Who can forget these timeless songs like ‘Suhana Safar aur yeh mausam haseeen...’(MADHUMATI), ‘Maine Tere Liye Hi Saat Rang ke Sapne...’(ANAND), ‘Koi Hota Jisko Apna...’(MERE APNE), ‘Rajnigandha Phool Tumhaare...’( RAJNIGANDHA), ‘Jaaneman Jaaneman Tere Do Nayan… ‘(CHOTI SI BAAT) but alas today, perhaps, nobody remembers the musical genius who composed these immortal songs. Does anybody recall the music director? Well the great music director who composed these songs is Salil Chowdhury, who gave memorable music in the hit movies from the 50’ to 70’s.

September 5, marks the death anniversary of this charismatic music director Glamsham.Com pays him homage and enlightens readers how film wizard Bimal Roy discovered him.

Salil Chowdhury better recognized in the film industry as Salil Da was born on 19 November 1923 in a small village, Gajipur in West Bengal. He had a strong passion for music and writing since childhood. After a successful foray in Bengali films he was noticed by film legend Bimal Roy who was impressed by his Bengali film, RIKSHAWALLA. Salilda had not only composed the film’s music but had even penned the script. Hence Bimal Roy invited him to Mumbai and asked to adapt it in Hindi. Bimal Roy also roped him to compose the music. Thus the classic DO BIGHA ZAMEEN was made. The movie not only became commercial success but it was critically applauded both for its content and its music.

Thus was born the Bimal Roy and Salil Chowdhury association that gave many hits like BIRAJ BAHU and MADHUMATI. However it is believed when Bimal Roy began MADHUMATI with Dilip Kumar, the then superstar of Indian Cinema, Dilip Kumar expressed his reservation against Salil Chowdhury, as he felt his Salilda may not be able to live up the demands of popular commercial music like Naushad, Shanker Jaikishen and S.D. Burman. This hurt the ego of Salilda and he pledged to give music that may flatter Dilip Kumar. Remember the songs Aaja Re Pardesi..., Dil Tadap Tadap Ke...,Ghadi Ghadi Mora Dil Dhadke.., Suhana Safar aur yeh mausam haseeen...

True to his vow he did give music that became the movie’s biggest asset. Interestingly Salil Chowdhury also went away winning the Best Music Filmfare Award, out beating the popular music directors Shankar Jaikishan who were in the race for YAHUDI and O.P. Nayar in PHAGUN.
