Sachin and Ranjeeta are back on screen together again. Their performance in ANKHIYON KE JHAROKHON SE, Rajshri production's 1978 hit, has prompted JAANA PEHCHANA. The production house may not say it, but this is a sequel to that movie. It probably has to be a sequel that has been pondered for the longest possible time ever-33 years!

Sachin is the director, lead actor, singer and screenplay co-writer all rolled into one. So I guess there was no scope for anyone else to do anything much. Even the idea, I guess could have been his. The first few minutes, even after a jarring opening scene, are indeed a joy to watch. But sadly, that joy is short-lived. The screenplay is shoddy, the plot, though interesting, never moves beyond a point and the end is amateurish.

This movie is for old-timers who have soaked in the brilliance and freshness of the lead pair of that time. A newcomer, will not be able to make much sense, even though the film is replete with scenes from the old hit. In fact, almost three-quarters of the films is ANKHIYON KE JHAROKHON SE. The production house is known for clean, family entertainers and this one does fit that bill. However, there was so much of potential in the idea that it has not moved beyond the discussion table. It looks like the script was hastily gotten and executed with equal haste. What was the need when you have come 33 years later? You had all the time in the world.

The technicians are raw, the lighting is harsh, the sets are gaudy, the styling (clothes) is flashy and even the camera angles don't work. What works are the old shots and the music which is still evergreen.

When you compare the finished product of 1978 to 2011, you will see so many technical glitches as mentioned above that you wonder how this could have ever passed the 'first draft' stage! Such wonderful lighting, beautiful costumes of that time, bellbottoms, huge collars et al...
And the message they are trying to give is also negative. I mean no one waits for 33 years to start his life all over again. I mean, yes, you do feel the loss of a loved one, you grieve, but mate, you have a life to live! 'I lost my Lily on 6th April 1978,' grieves Arun in 2011.

Before Lily (Ranjeeta) dies in the 1978 film, she had made Arun promise her that he would rise in life so that she would be at peace.

In JAANA PEHCHANA, Arun does fulfill that promise. He is a successful businessman. He has a hospital built in Lily's name that reaches out to the poor. But he is sad all the time. Until he meets Asha Dayal, an author who wants to write his biography. Asha (Ranjeeta), you guessed right, bears an uncanny resemblance to Lily. And even though Arun has refused many offers, he agrees to Asha's request.

Like I mentioned earlier, strictly for lovers of the 1978 hit.
