Capping off the year with easily the biggest, the greatest and arguably the best of them all, actor par excellence Aamir Khan's and UTV 's Christmas bonanza, DANGAL, does warrant huge expectations from its audio, especially with Pritam heading the music department, along with lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya, both fresh from the astounding success of AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL.

'Haanikarak Bapu' commences with a humorous take on Dharmendra's superhit ANKHEIN song, 'Apno Pe Sitam' which unfolds into a heart-warming composition narrating the alleged 'torture' that the children face from over dominating parents who want them to excel in life. The childish playfulness and innocence is conveyed through some absolutely amusing lyrics that evoke laughter. Another highlight is the lovely rendition (the Haryanvi rap is just hilarious) by Manganiyar child folk artists Sarwar Khan and Sartaz Khan Barna whose rooted, rustic vocals are class and use of local instruments like street banjo and 'ektara' add to the charm.

The next on the playlist is 'Dhaakad' (meaning rock strong personality) which is an excellent Haryanvi rap and hip-hop number that is once again totally rooted and rustic in its composition . Pritam uses Raftaar well and his apt rap introduces the female lead, a world class wrestler who is not afraid to take takes on men in a male dominated society in Haryana. The thumping chorus 'Aisi dhaakad hai' is addictive. Amitabh's lyrics do justice to the towering personality of the female leads.

Actor perfectionist, Aamir Khan renders the second version of 'Dhaakad' and he is simply excellent! Can he ever go wrong! Never! There is not a note that is out of tune or not in sync. He is a delight to hear!

'Gilehriyaan' can qualify for any Karan Johar/ Yash Raj film as a petal soft romantic ballad and is rendered with feelings by Jonita Gandhi . Soft arrangements and lovely flowing melody and identifiable lyrics. The song brings back memories of Pritam's BARFI days.

Daler Mehndi is just the right choice for the inspirational, motivational title track 'Dangal', which, just like the SULTAN title track provides a peak into the story and urges one to go on in life and not give up but fight. The thumping beats and Daler's vociferous and boisterous vocals are the USP of the track.

Arijit's emotive rendition is the highlight of a lovely sad, separation track 'Naina' that's not an ordinary composition about lovers separated due to circumstances, but is more philosophical in its thoughts and talks about relationships and not being together during tough times.

The playlist ends on a festive, humorous note (in fact just the right note!), with the Haryanvi folk based wedding celebration number 'Idiot Banna' . Its customary in the weddings of the North (Bihar, UP and Punjab and Haryana) where the two sides (groom and bride) indulge in light bantering . Sultana and Jyoti Nooran (Nooran sisters) render the number with zest and elan.

To conclude, it's an amazing musical Xmas gift that Pritam-Amitabh provide through Aamir's Khan's DANGAL. A complete album with a variety of songs, that are not just in keeping with the story and script but are interesting and entertaining as well. The regional flavour may restrict its appeal somewhat, but since the film is Haryana based, this was essential. While Salman's SULTAN audio was more commercial and so was the film, DANGAL audio is a class-plus-mass deal and our picks are 'Haanikarak Bapu', 'Dhaakad' (both versions), 'Naina' and 'Idiot Banna'. The best thing is that all the big names (in the credits) have been utilised and aptly, and are not there just as decorative pieces. The situational numbers will aid the proceedings and will surely attain popularity when the film releases to a bumper Christmas week.

One can't help but add, a la Big B - Pritam ne do maara (ADHM & DANGAL), magar solid maara!
