After the super hit, RUSTOM (producer), Neeraj Pandey wields the directorial baton for a biopic M.S.DHONI- THE UNTOLD STORY based on Indian cricket team's most successful and popular captain, Mahender Singh Dhoni. Expectations are plenty from young and superbly talented and hugely popular composer, Amaal Malik, as M.S. DHONI appears to be his most prestigious album.

The first song that one encounters straight up is the motivational 'Besabriyaan' which in a nutshell provides an interesting insight into the struggle of the male lead and his restlessness in his endeavor to achieve his goal. And can also be classified as a theme/ title song due to its narrative nature. Manoj's lyrics are apt. Armaan renders the number with zeal.

Palak Muchal's honey sweet vocals sway hearts in the all-female romantic number, 'Kaun Tujhe'. Manoj's lyrics makes this love song different from the rest, albeit the tune that Amaal chooses is heard before but the treatment and music arrangements certainly make this a good one.

Next up is another love song, 'Jab Tak', rendered well by Armaan. The lively arrangements and flowing rhythm add to the charm of this romantic number.

'Jab Tak' (Redux) makes for a good repeat hear.

Amaal reserves the best romantic song of the album, 'Phir Kabhi' for (certainly) the most popular singer today, Arijit Singh who as always comes up trumps. The song is a delight to listen due to its lovely rhythm and superb arrangements.

Amaal shows his diversity with the hard rock based inspirational number ' Parwah Nahin' which should turn out to be an anthem. The passion, single minded determination of the protagonist, irrespective of success or failure in his dhun to achieve his dreams, is conveyed well through some lovely lyrics. Siddarth Basrur renders the number like a true rockstar and his deep vocals suit Dhoni.

A very old adage commonly heard in the North (especially Bihar and UP) is 'Padhoge likhoge to banoge nawab, Khelego kudoge to banoge kharab' is used superbly by Manoj and Amaal to convert it into a very humorous but situational number, 'Padhoge Likhoge'. It's just the right song that portrays the playful character of Dhoni as a child and apparently his elder sister chiding him for not studying and just playing cricket. Ananya Nanda and Adithiyan A. Prithviraj render the number with zest.

There is another interesting track, 'Har Gali Mein Dhoni' (Rochak Kohli), though not part of the original soundtrack.

Summing up, Amaal delivers as per expectations in perhaps his biggest (solo) album as a composer. Having said that, there are too many romantic songs, though M. S. DHONI- AN UNTOLD STORY is a sports biopic. Our picks - 'Phir Kabhi', 'Parwah Nahin' and 'Padhoge Likhoge'. The music will surely help the cause of the movie which releases worldwide at the end of this month!
