Prominent music director Bapi Lahiri Thursday joined the Congress party, lending his star power to better the prospects of the party in upcoming general election.

Lahiri, who has scored raunchy numbers in 435 films, said his childhood dream of joining the Congress had finally been fulfilled.

Reminiscent of the induction of playback singer Kumar Sanu in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday, when he rendered a song praising Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lahiri belted out an old Hindi number, making suitable alterations: "Oh Mother India, we are your children... Janata ki maang hai Sonia, saare desh ki maang hai Soniaji, har koyi maange Soniaji".

Besides using music to canvass votes for the party, Lahiri said he would fulfil other duties assigned by the party.

His wife Chitrani Lahiri, daughter Reema and son Pappa also joined the party.
