Govinda among candidates in Congress' fourth list

Matinee idol Govinda will lock horns with Petroleum Minister Ram Naik in Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency in the coming general election.

Govinda figured among the 16 candidates named in an updated fourth list released by the Congress Thursday. The actor joined the party March 15.

The other prominent candidates in the list, covering four states, were former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Janardhan Reddy (Visakhapatnam), D. Vithal Rao (Mahaboobnagar) and Bapu Hari Choure (Dhule).

Reddy was shifted from his traditional Narasapeth constituency in Andhra Pradesh to the coastal Visakhaptnam Lok Sabha seat.

The party effected a change in respect of Bobbili seat in Andhra Pradesh, where it had named P. Satyanarayana as the candidate. His wife Jhansi Laxmi will now contest the seat.

In Gujarat, the Congress fielded several political lightweights, including Raj Kumar Gupta against Minister of State for Home Affairs Harin Pathak in Ahmedabad.

Thursday's list covered Andhra Pradesh (seven seats), Gujarat (four), Maharashtra (three) and Orissa (two).

With this list, the Congress has so far announced its candidates for 197 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats.

Besides, the Congress announced the names of 99 candidates for polls to the 147-member Orissa assembly.
