I think it won’t be an exaggeration to quote – ‘K Asif –Thy name is Perfection’ because the legendary filmmaker pumped all his energies into making his film MUGHAL-E-AZAM a ‘Milestone’.

K. ASIF

Like a sacred saint K Asif religiously devoted his entire life on the film. He worked dedicatedly on every nuance and details of each frame. Asif’s devotion for the movie can be gauged from the fact that Asif was not in a hurry to make his dream film and took 16 long years to complete the film!

Readers would be surprised to know that it took almost two years to construct the movie’s epic set ‘Sheesh Mahal’. During these two years Asif had stopped all shooting. From dawn till dusk he monitored the construction work of the set.

Eminent film music director Naushad, who gave the film’s music, praising his commitment to the film once said, “The Sheesh Mahal set was build at Mohan studio in Andheri (Mumbai). What surprised me was that until the set was ready, Asif Sahab did not left the studio.  He would sleep on a simple mat on the floors of the studio!” He added, “Watching his devotion it appeared as he if he was born for a mission and had come on this earth only to make MUGHAL-E-AZAM.”

Be it the majestic Sheesh Mahal or simple the shoes of Prince Salim (Dilip Kumar) Asif compromised on none. According to historians Asif had specially hired craftsmen from Agra to design Salim’s shoe, which had intricate design of ‘Real’ gold and silver!!!

Besides an eye for details in costume and sets, Asif was also a hard task master in acting department.

Readers may recall the film’s introduction scene, where King Akbar (Prithviraj Kapoor) is shown walking bare foot, in the scorching deserts toward the shrine of Fatehpur Sikri to seek blessing for a son.

Initially Prithviraj Kapoor was hesitant to shoot the scene in day time due the intense heat of desert. But Asif was adamant and to solace Prithviraj Kapoor, Asif himself removed his shoes and walked bare foot behind Kapoor to motivate him and to capture a ‘perfect’ shot!

Glamsham.Com remembers the movie maverick K.Asif on his 94th birth anniversary.
