A theory that we had postulated a couple of years back, and one which is now being referred to by many others also, holds true this week too. To recall we had said that the audience prefers to stay home a week or so before a biggie releases.

Just to elucidate, Friday the 24th January will see the release of Salman Khan's JAI HO, and so the two major releases of the week, Suneel Darshan's KARLE PYAAR KARLE and Nawazuddin Siddiqui's much delayed MISS LOVELY, failed to make a mark with the audience. Both the mentioned films were below the 15-20 percent mark and have little chance of improving. The week also saw a third release, one with a gourmet title PARANTHE WALI GALI which fared even worse.

Meanwhile last Friday's Divya Khosla Kumar directed YAARIYAN managed good show netting in the range of 28-30 crore, and it thus becomes the first success of 2014. The other release of the same week, Abhishek Chaubey's DEDH ISHQIYA managed to improve after a disappointing opening day, closing the week with around 21-22 crore. The film still has to work hard for emulating the success of its predecessor, ISHQIYA.
We must add here that both YAARIYAN and DEDH ISHQIYA should be thankful to the January 14 holiday (Makar Sankranti and Eid-E-Milad-Un- Nabi) for the extra 2 crore!
