Well, the stars doing their hairs, slipping into different hairstyles is not news anymore. In fact they have got to do it to stay in the news and that?s understood! It?s a visual medium and all these gimmicks are a part and parcel of the profession. The fans also love it and the moment later the new hairstyle becomes the craze of the town! But hey, I have always been thinking about the people behind the cameras. Let?s take for instance the Captain of the ship himself, the director! A funny but nonetheless interesting thought comes to my mind when I make an observation about them. The next moment I have this question pumping up in my mind and that?s, Why do most of the directors are either moustached or have a prominent beard?
Lets? take some examples, first the bearded ones because I think they are quite a few in numbers. Look at Shekhar Kapur, Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, J P Dutta, Amol Palekar, Ketan Mehta, Rajat Mukherjee, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and now Rakeysh Mehra. If you think it?s only the Bollywood directors keeping the fad, think again! Don?t know about Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola (of GODFATHER fame) or even Peter Jackson (of LORD OF THE RINGS fame)? Even they form bearded lot of movie directors. Back to Bollywood, we can add Pralhad Kakkar because the buzz is that he is soon stepping into film production.
And now let?s turn towards the moustached geniuses. From the past to the present, i.e.; from Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Ramesh Sippy, Hrishikesh Mukherjee to the present day Mani Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma, Pradeep Sarkar, Rohan Sippy (his cowboy moustache is a stand-out), Priyadarshan, Dharmesh Darshan, John Mathew Mathan etc.
So what feeling do you get from this? At least I think that directors belong to the species of the ?thinking? people and the facial ?crop? justifies the inkling in a big way. It gives a clue that directors are the most self-immersed individuals and some of them might just be keeping the beards wantedly, as an identity of sort! The second reason could be that they are so lost in themselves that they simply might not be getting the time to do the shaving act! Ok take it easy, I don?t mean to say that directors who don?t keep moustaches or beards don?t think or they are not talented. All the non-bearded directors are equally competent, but it?s a general remark based on what I think of the bearded ones. Nothing personal got it!
Still there is a respite for the aspiring directors who don?t wanna keep a moustache. Just see Ashutosh Gowarikar, Farhan Akhtar, Rituparno Ghosh or Milan Luthria. Aren?t they talented? So there is no reason to get disappointed, even if you don?t wanna keep a moustache or a beard, you can still make it!
