Rani Mukerji’s MARDAANI has been making waves with the audience not only for its hard hitting content but also because it has been granted an ‘A’ certificate from the Censor Board of India.

While the Censor Board feels the film isn’t suitable for the kids, Rani Mukerji begs to differ with on this opinion. “I feel very strongly that this film should be made ‘U/A’ because as a girl, as a married woman who will have kids in the near future, I feel for this cause. If the 12 year olds don’t get to watch this film how are they going to be aware of the things happening around them? There are so many people who have come out of the film and asked me does this really happen and I wonder in which world are the living in? This kind of shakes me and tells me that still people are very unaware of what is happening,” states Rani.

She further adds significantly, “And films like MARDAANI will explain the 12 years and the 15 years old why their parents are asking them not to go out alone. For instance, there is this big personality and his daughter is 16 and she saw the film, though she is not allowed as she is below 18. But when she saw the film, she forced her dad to watch it and then she called me and said now I understand why my father doesn’t allow me to go out alone. This is the kind of reaction I am getting from people! They are asking why is the film rated ‘A’ because there is nothing wrong with the film. I want to ask the Censor Board on what basis have they rated MARDAANI ‘A’? I also wonder how a Censor Board cannot have a distinction of a film only for kids, or 12 year olds or 15 year olds. When a place like United Kingdom can have 12+ certificate, Canada can have 15+ certificate then why not India?”

MARDAANI, directed by Pradeep Sarkar, hit the screens on August 22, 2014 and is produced by Yash Raj Films.
