Filmmaker Rensil D’Silva went through a tough time shooting for his last flick UNGLI which stars Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Randeep Hooda, Sanjay Dutt, Neil Bhoopalam and Angad Bedi.
Ask Rensil what caused the delay in the film and he discloses, “Well the most obvious reason was Sanjay Dutt, who went to jail last year. It was a tough one and completely unexpected. Luckily I had finished almost 80% shoot so it didn’t kill me. But 4-5 scenes we completed when he was having his legal hassles. It then became a domino effect. If you see UNGLI, it is an ensemble film where 5 actors are required in all the frames. So if one guy goes missing, then it becomes difficult.”

He further elaborates, “The second delay was the music. We just didn’t get what we wanted because of the nature of the film. UNGLI is not a regular masala film. It required a certain soundtrack which I am very happy to say that I have got that with an ensemble of musicians. So those were the two main reasons. Another minor reason was that we were looking for a solo week to release the film. This is a packed year. Karan Johar first thought of releasing in May but then things didn’t work out so later we decided to arrive in November.”
With the film going through so much, we probe Rensil about how did he cope up with the delay?
“The delays frustrated the hell out of me. I think the worst that can happen to a director is for his lead actor to go to jail and for him to face the possibility of an incomplete film. It is not a film Karan and I could do about. Sanjay Dutt went to jail and that’s the end for me. I cannot do anything about it. I have to reshoot it. That is hell of a lot of money and time. And the mental stress you go through is unparalleled,” admits D’Silva.

However, he is quick to list the positive side to the delay. “That said and done, but one thing the delay helped me was with my music. Had I released UNGLI last year, I wouldn’t have got these songs. Songs are becoming extremely crucial for the success of the film. Promo and the songs are the marketing units. They draw the audience to the film. I have an exemplary album whatever the hard work and delay. It is a blessing in disguise though it shouldn’t happen to anyone,” says Rensil.
Now that the film is up for a release, we quiz Rensil, did he ever have any back up had Sanjay not been able to complete the shoot of the film and he reveals, “I didn’t have any back up and whether I would reshoot or not would have been Karan’s decision because it involves lot of money. However, if I had to reshoot, I would go to Anil Kapoor, with whom I am working on ‘24’ and would have told him to please do the film as I’m was in deep shit.”
UNGLI is slated to release on November 28, 2014.
