Comedy Couple story
Deep Sharma (Saqib Saleem) and Zoya Batra (Shweta Basu Prasad) are in a live – in relationship and are an upcoming stand up comedians who perform together. The movie is about their relationships and the ‘jokes’ they say and happen around.
Comedy Couple story
He is an ex IT wala belonging to a traditional family, She is the darling daughter of an independent artiste – her mother happily settled abroad – Zohra Batra (Pooja Bedi).
Together, they set the stage on fire – cracking jokes on those typical stand up themes – small town munda, saher ki ladki, khee khee, hee hee, sex, beer and oh dear that gaumutra, all is happening in Gachchi (Marathi 2017) fame director Nachiket Samant’s rom com on stand up couples. Thankfully not undesirably vulgar and raunchy but ‘safely’ feel good and teasingly naughty pyaar ki woh kahani jo hai toh sadiyon purani phir bhi lubhani(matlab – it’s a rom com about two stand up comedians).
A Bollywood list of movies on stand up comedians is so tiny and this one fits in easily. Thanks to its atmosphere and the initial pleasant gigs/acts.
If anyone is by mistake searching for something like Hollywood’s Rubberface, The King of Comedy or Obvious Child then hold on , it’s just a rom com that touches some vital issues like ‘live – in’ ‘marriage’ ‘discrimination’ the prejudice, ‘gaumutra’ the media circus all are there but just for a tickle or may be a short giggle.
The writings by Raghav Raj Kakker (screenplay & dialogue), Kashyap Kapoor (screenplay & dialogue), Bikas Ranjan Mishra (story) with Bikas Ranjan Mishra Gaurav Sharma’s (additional screenplay & dialogue) does tickle but fails to give a hearty laugh.
The conflict between Deep and Zoya should have been creative and different rather than simple and normal.
The rom com by the second half falls in the tired, tested but trusted predictable trap and turns out to be something ‘normal’ rather than something extraordinary.
Yes agreed, Nachiket Samant is no Gillian Robespierre (Obvious Child) and no Imtiaz Ali (the better version during Socha Na Tha, Jab We Met wala we adore) he is something in between and that can be good and bad. It depends on his next movie as far as Comedy Couple is concerned it’s a harmless rom com based on a stand up couple that’s all.
Comedy Couple is elevated by some brilliant performances.
Saqib Saleem is superb. Shweta Basu Prasad shows that she is a notch above her contemporaries.
Delightful cameos by Rajesh Tailang, Aadar Malik, Pooja Bedi, Subha Rajput, Jasmeet Singh Bhatia, Madhu Saschdeva and Pranay Manchanda add good value.
Some stand ups may not be welcomed by all but Comedy Couples is a rom com about two standup comedians which is initially bold and teasy in its jokes but later settles as a pleasant feel good breezy love story of two ‘jokers’ who just love to be together even on ‘stage’.
