DURGAMATI Movie Review
She is the bombastic devi draped in Lal Saree in a lonely haveli akeli crying revenge making you cringe and wonder ponder on the bamboozling self-defeating hara-kiri on OTT.. Hee hee khee khee. Save me.
Bachao is the word that keeps coming out of your mouth again and again whenever this satayi hui bureaucrat IAS officer Chanchal Chauhan (Bhumi Pednekar) charged for the murder of her fiancé Shakti (Karan Kapadia). Goes surreally wild and spooky in this deserted mansion. Brought for police interrogation conducted by CBI Joint Director Satakshi Ganguly (Mahie Gill – in a strange accent). Brother of Shakti ACP Ajay Singh (Jisshu Sengupta – after the horror of SADAK 2 he continues to star in another disaster and wastes his talent but is not to be blamed). Ajay also has an agenda against Chanchal.
Chanchal is interrogated for her association with Minister of Water Resources Ishwar Prasad (Arshad Warsi) a clean politician and a public favourite.
This is the plot of this said horror flick which surprisingly started getting better during the last 15 minutes. The pre climax no matter how filmy at least had a point to prove on ghost, politicians and social system but the self-defeating suicidal last minute revelation mercilessly stabs the interest and leaves the audience to cringe again and ask for mercy.
Relying completely on old school scares DURGAMATI – the Hindi remake of G Ashok’s Telugu-Tamil bilingual film BHAAGAMATHIE (2018) starring Anushka Shetty is a blunder in its said genre. If the makers have stuck to its social theme during the pre-climax then it would have washed most of its sin but they wanted both the believers and non-believers both in one go.
Logic goes for toss one after another. Yahaan kya chal raha mujhe kuch samajh nahi aa raha says one of the characters sharing the similar sentiments of the audience.
Bhumi Pednekar disappoints in a big way in her worst movie till date. She charms initially but soon after entering the mansion her efforts to sniffle, snarl, fails miserably. DURGAMATI – THE MYTH was not her cup of tea at all. She is not as strong as Anushka Shetty and how can Amol Palekar do a role designed for Sunny Deol.
