Rinku (Sara Ali Khan), has been running away from home with her lover since she was 14 and10 years later still, after being caught for the umpteenth time, she wouldn’t reveal his name. There was nothing to be done by the family but to get her forced married – with just about any man they could find – as long as he wasn’t from Bihar.

A group of doctors had just arrived from Delhi, to volunteer at the Relief Camp and Rinku’s Mamas find one who would do. But under the blanket of a rainy night, his men kidnap Vishu (Dhanush). Vishu, a traditional Tamilian boy, was to be engaged to Mandy, in three days – but he never gets to voice this out as he’s gagged, carried home in a sack and given laughing gas, whilst performing wedding rituals with a sedated Rinku.

Finally, Rinku & Vishu are wed and sent off to Delhi. However, on the journey Rinku confesses about Sajjad (Akshay Kumar) to Vishu and Vishu informs her about his imminent engagement. Both decide to disavow the “marriage” and go on with their lives. However, on the day of Vishnu’s engagement, a “happiest groom ever” video begins to circulate amongst his friends & family. It is Rinku & Vishu’s wedding video!!

Vishu calls-off his engagement with Mandy and soon realises that he may be falling in love with Rinku. But what about Sajjad, does he finally come? When Sajjad does finally arrive, Rinku & Vishu’s world turns topsy-turvy. Do the boy and girl remain as man and wife or each gets spouse of their own choice and how, forms the crux of the story.

Atrangi Re, as the title suggests, is a unique love triangle’ humourous in parts, which gets emotional towards the end. A bittersweet love story of a simple man, a ‘headstrong’ woman and a ‘bigger than life’ idea of love, with some soulful music.

Atrangi Re’s score and soundtrack are composed by music maestro A R Rahman making his second collaboration with Aanand L Rai after Raanjhanaa, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil. The film’s songs are folk-classical-based compositions e.g. Chaka Chak, sung by Shreya Ghoshal, is based on Carnatic music.

Sara Ali Khan is decent and has put in efforts to mouth dialogues in rural accent and mannerisms. Dhanush’s character just follows the goings-on without much to do. Having said so Dhanush has a few LOL scenes. Akshay Kumar looks his age and does not fit in Sajjad’s skin. Akshay Kumar’s is more like an extended cameo with most of the story being told with Sara and Dhanush.

Adding one brownie for Aanand L Rai’s unique thought of love and emotion that is at least a one time watch.
