Rani Mukerji: HICHKI is a dedication to all teachers

Bollywood's senior actress Rani Mukerji is returning to films after four years. The actress, who is strongly rooted to Bengal, was present in Kolkata recently at an award function when and she spoke about her upcoming film HICHKI, slated to hit the big screens on Mar 23. IBNS correspondent Souvik Ghosh catches up with her.

Do you have any HICHKI in life?
My HICHKI (hiccups) was that I used to stammer in my childhood days. So I overcame my stammering and became an actor. I think we all have hiccups in life -- but the beauty of life is there is no life without hiccup -- and one has to get over it.

What is special about the film?
Sometimes some films come which not only entertain us but also educate us as well, and also leave a message. (The film has been inspired by American motivational speaker Brad Cohen who in his book Front of The Class had detailed on Tourette Syndrome, a common neuropsychiatric disorder of childhood, characterized by multiple motor tics and at least one vocal (phonic) tic.)

What special message is there in the film?
The film is a dedication to all the teachers who have shared so much knowledge all their life and (teaching is) the most noble profession. So all teachers, children and parents should go and watch the film. The film is for the entire family. It will be easier for children to watch as all examinations are getting over by 23rd (Mar 23). I am sure the audience will have a good time.

Are you looking to work in Bengali films?
Obviously I will work if I get a good story.

How do you feel to receive Aparajita awards 2018?
My mother is very happy that I have got the award. For her, everything starts with Bengal and ends with the state. I feel warm and I welcome receiving the award from my own state, that too just before the release of HICHKI.

What do you think is more important for an actor's success?
I think one should know why one is in acting. Is one there for love of acting or for other things that come with it- like a good life, travels, etc. that come with acting in Hindi films. One has to love his or her craft.

Rani Mukerji: Today actors are really spoiled & pampered

Rani Mukerji is one of those few actresses who don’t refrain from calling a spade a spade.

These days there’s lot of pressure actors have to face when it comes to maintaining their bodies or their appearance and Rani offered a very interesting take on this, “Frankly I don’t understand this pressure because I feel that today actors are really spoiled and pampered. There are PR person, media person, manager, fitness trainer and the never ending list. We were never pampered this way. We used to do our work and if sometimes we would end up saying something wrong, we used to get even scolded for that but from that we used to learn so much. But these days the PRs have a complete list of ‘Yeh bolo, yeh mat bolo. Do this don’t do that’ so you see the actors these days are taken so much care of that I don’t think they have any kind of pressure with all these trainings and guidance. They wear rented clothes so what kind of pressure they are having? (smiles). Aapko khoobsurat kapde pehenne ko mil rahe hai, log aapko tayar kar rahe hai, itna khoobsurat bana rahe hai toh kis baat ka pressure hai bhai?

Rani Mukerji: Not sure about academics but our actors definitely need acting classes

Rani Mukerji is all set to enthrall the audience with her upcoming film HICHKI. The actress will be seen on silver screen after a four year hiatus. In the film Rani plays the role of a teacher who is having Tourette Syndrome.Talking about how playing role of a differently abled roles affects her as an actor Rani shared, “The life that god has given is so special like when I had researched for my character in BLACK or HICHKI I started thanking god every day because suddenly you feel so blessed that you can see, hear, talk move your limbs, and do everything without anyone’s aid! So when you go through moments like that in your life you only become more humbled as a human being and all the other things stop to matter. You suddenly gain lot of wisdom through these experiences and you start to live truly. So when people tell me that despite being in this industry how I can survive without being on social media? I find that really funny because it’s not important to me or for my life! If some people are giving it so much importance then it’s their problem. All these PRship is of what use because if you actually see then everything boils down to the fact whether I was good in my film or not?”

I remember going with my school bag to watch her shoot and she remembers me as that kid.”

Rani Mukerji: I have faced Hichkis due to my height and voice

After giving a hard-hitting performance in MARDAANI (2014) as Shivani Shivaji Roy, power house performer Rani Mukerji is back after four years with yet another sensitive film HICHKI where she will be playing a teacher having a Tourette syndrome.

The film portrays the protagonist’s struggle to change her shortcomings into her strength and when asked about what all Hichkis (hiccups/hurdles)she faced in real life the actress frankly replied, “I think obviously my height and my voice but then luckily I had Aamir opposite me (smiles). Then I even worked with Abhishek Bachchan, there my height became an issue but later it was said it’s nice that I am short because then people suddenly compared our pairing with his parents’- Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan. So it kind of worked but if I had come in an era of only tall heroes then it would have been a problem but I came in an era where we had Salman, Aamir, Shah Rukh and I looked pretty good with them considering my short height."
