Ex-Lanka pacer Zoysa found guilty of influencing match results (Ld)

Dubai, Nov 19 (IANS) Former Sri Lanka fast bowler Nuwan Zoysa has been found guilty of three offences, including being party to…influence match results, under the Anti-Corruption Code (ACU) of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the world governing body said on Thursday. The sanctions on him will be announced later.

Zoysa, a 42-year-old left-arm pacer, was charged under the ICC Code in November 2018 and has been found guilty on all charges after he exercised his right to be heard by an independent anti-corruption tribunal.

The charges include being party to an effort to fix or contrive or to otherwise influence improperly the result, progress, conduct or other aspect of an International match (Code Article 2.1.1).; directly soliciting, inducing, enticing or encouraging a player to breach Code Article 2.1.1; and, failing to disclose to the ICC’s ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in corrupt conduct under the Code.

“The charges relate to the T10 Cricket League played in the UAE in December 2017. The ICC was appointed by the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) as the Designated Anti-Corruption Official for the purposes of the ECB’s Code for this tournament and as such are issuing these charges on the ECB’s behalf,” the ICC said.

The charges follow a ‘recent amnesty’ to participants who had previously failed to report any information concerning corrupt conduct in Sri Lankan cricket.

According to the ICC statement, Zoysa, who played 30 Tests and 95 ODIs for Sri Lanka, remains suspended and the sanctions will be announced later while Gunawardene has also been provisionally suspended under the ECB Code pending the determination of these charges, stated the ICC.
